Nagoya Railroad (Meitetsu) has decided to redevelop Meitetsu Nagoya Station, its largest terminal, and will begin relocating and expanding the station from fiscal year 2026.
With the opening of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen approaching, Nagoya City is promoting a “super terminal concept” to realize smooth transfers to all modes of transportation at Nagoya Station. Meitetsu has decided to jointly develop a redevelopment plan with Kintetsu Railway and others to build a high-rise building integrating commercial facilities, offices, and hotels on a large site of approximately 520,000 square meters, including the Meitetsu Nagoya Station building.
Meitetsu Nagoya Station, which was built in its current structure in 1954, is often criticized for being difficult to navigate due to the aging of the facility and the fact that trains from multiple destinations depart and arrive at the same platform. Meitetsu is aware of many other issues, such as narrow platforms and concourses, many steps, and numerous ticket gates scattered around the station, and sees the development of the surrounding area as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” and will redevelop the station into a functional and advanced station of international standard in parallel with the redevelopment.
The construction will be carried out in two stages while the station continues to operate. In the first stage of the renovation, an expanded platform will be installed on the first basement floor, and ticket gates will be placed on the first floor above ground and the second basement floor above and below it. Elevators connecting each floor will be added to improve the problem of steps, and the latest technology will be introduced in the information equipment. The station is scheduled to start operation in 2033, but in order to secure space for laying two tracks underground in the redevelopment building outside the current station area, the platform will be moved to near the basement of the current Meitetsu Grand Hotel.
In the second stage of the renovation, two additional tracks will be laid on the site where the current station facilities have been removed, making it a four-track station, eliminating operational bottlenecks. The platform and concourse will be further expanded, and an “airport access platform” will be installed to improve ease of understanding for passengers going to Chubu Centrair International Airport. Platform doors will also be installed, and multiple routes will be made barrier-free. The new Meitetsu Nagoya Station is scheduled to be completed in the early 2040s, and Meitetsu, which is investing approximately 320 billion yen in the renovation, aims to expand its passenger share by strengthening its rail network and airport access functions.
