On May 23 (Fri), 2025, Toyo Rapid Railway Co., Ltd. held a groundbreaking ceremony for Ebigawa New Station (tentative name), which will be constructed between Higashi-kaijin Station and Hasama Station under an agreement with Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture.
The new station will be located about 2.0 km from any of the neighboring stations, and will have two elevated side platforms with movable platform gates on the second floor of the station building, and a ticket gate on the first floor. Elevators and up and down escalators will connect each platform to the ticket gate floor, and waiting rooms, rest areas, and shops are also planned to be installed.
The Ebi River that flows near the new station is the river from which the place name “Funabashi” was derived, as it was once so full of water that it was difficult to cross the river with a bridge, and small boats were lined up in a row on the river instead of a bridge. In this upstream area, the aging municipal medical center will be rebuilt and relocated, and the city will lead urban development based on the “Funabashi Medical Town Concept” with medical and welfare functions as the core.
The city believes that improved transportation convenience is necessary for the development of the new town, and has requested that the Toyo Rapid Railway, which runs east-west through the area, build a new station. The construction cost of the new station is expected to be approximately 7.6 billion yen, with the city covering the entire cost with some assistance from the national government.
Preparatory work for the new station began in February 2025, and after main construction begins soon, the station is scheduled to open at the end of March 2029. The name of the station has not yet been decided, but the city is considering how to decide on the name, including through a public competition.
