The genuine leather seats in the express Green Car have been turned into a “napping lounge” – Take a nap in a private room at the station and reset your tiredness

JR Kyushu System Solutions (Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City) will conduct a demonstration experiment of the private nap room service “Nap Lounge RelaQ” from August 1 (Fri) to 31 (Sun), 2025 in the station building directly connected to Hakata Station for one month.

With the concept of “a space where you can take a short break and relax between travels,” a private lounge will be installed in the “Coworking & Co-Learning Space “Q” Hakata” on the first basement floor of Hakata Station AMU Plaza. Since it is a private space that can be locked, you don’t need to worry about your luggage, and you can take a nap or rest in peace without others seeing your sleeping face.

The high-back seats and footrests made of genuine leather, which were once used in the 885 series express trains nicknamed “White Kamome” and “White Sonic,” support your body. Each use is for 30 minutes, and the rooms are equipped with dimmable and adjustable lighting, temperature-adjustable air conditioning, and moderate ambient sounds are played in the private rooms to prevent people from falling into a deep sleep due to being too quiet.

Can a short nap relieve fatigue?

Naohisa Uchimura, president of Kurume University and a leading expert in sleep medicine, who advised on the development of the room, says, “Taking a short nap refreshes the brain and makes the time that follows much more productive.” The ideal nap time is about 15 to 20 minutes, and giving the brain and body a sense of rest leads to recovery from fatigue and improved work efficiency. If the nap is longer than 30 minutes, you will feel drowsy after waking up, which will have the opposite effect, so a light sleep like a “doze” is said to be the most effective.

RelaQ is only available for a limited time in August, and business hours are from 9:30 to 17:30. No reservations, membership registration, or app installation are required, and you can use the room immediately if it is available. Payment is limited to cashless payment by credit card, electronic money, or QR code, and seasonal rates vary depending on the day and time, ranging from 650 to 850 yen per 30 minutes.
