Keio Corporation will be introducing a large free space for the first time in its new commuter train, the 2000 series, which will begin commercial operation in early 2026.
The 2000 series train design, developed with the concepts of safety and friendliness, makes extensive use of rounded shapes in both the exterior and interior. The company collected feedback from users and employees, analyzed their needs using AI that can analyze human sensibilities, and decided on the design that best matched the concept.
The new train is more energy-efficient and safer than previous trains, but its biggest feature is the free space marked by large windows that allow even children to look outside and enjoy the view. Designed to be safe and comfortable for all generations, this area has purposely had seats removed to make it easier for people in strollers and wheelchairs to use. The space will be installed in a single location between the doors of car 5, chosen because it is close to the elevators for boarding and disembarking.
In order to raise awareness of this space, Keio is accepting votes for a nickname through a special web form until June 10 (Tue). Participants can choose one of three options – “Hidamari (meaning sunny) Space,” “Nukumori (warmth) Ride,” or “Himawari (sunflower) Ride” – and the nickname that receives the most votes will be selected.
The 2000 series will begin commercial operation with one 10-car train in early 2026, followed by four 10-car trains, a total of 40 cars, by March 2027.
