Hiroshima Rapid Transit, which operates the Astram Line new transit system, will end commercial operation of its 6000 series vehicles on May 18 (Sun), 2025.
The Astram Line, which connects central Hiroshima with residential areas in the northwestern suburbs, opened in August 1994, and the 6000 series made its debut at the same time. Characterized by its iconic chrome yellow color and clear, rounded exterior design, it has been loved by Hiroshima residents for about 30 years as a symbol of the developing Hiroshima metropolitan area.
The 6000 series began to be scrapped in 2021 as they are being replaced by the new 7000 series, which offer improved ride comfort and lighter weight. Currently, only one train (the 18th train) remains, and the body of the train is wrapped with the message “Thank you 6000 series.” A total of 25 different messages and photos are displayed on posters and straps so that people inside the train can feel the train’s 30-year history.
The 6000 series operating schedule until its retirement has been announced on a special website, and a departure ceremony for the final run will be held at Hondori Station in the evening on the final day of operation, May 18 (Sun).
At the indoor play park “Kiond Hiroshima” in Hiroshima Stadium Park HiroPa, a retirement commemorative exhibition that looks back on the history of the 6000 series through photos and staged performances is being held until May 18 (Sun). At Kencho-mae Station and other locations, limited-edition 6000 series retirement commemorative goods such as key chains and neck straps will be on sale from May 14 (Web).
